These necklines which is highlighted in the picture also were mostly worn by the elite people as a fashion initially. Eventually people from other classes started using them as well.
These necklines used to be super tight and high on the neck. Some people who were not so good at tying them would tie them even more tight which would result in the cutoff of the brain supply through the vessels to the brain. Especially w hen drinking alcohol and stuff people would feel suffocated and die.
