Tallest Men in the World: Sultan Kosen
According to the Guinness World Record recognition, the world’s tallest man alive is Sultan Kosen. Sultan Kosen is a Kurdish farmer whose height stature stands at 8 feet 2.8 inches. Acromegaly is the term used for such abnormal conditions, in which the pituitary gland gets affected and starts producing an excessive amount of hormone which causes tumors in the pituitary gland. Due to this abnormal condition, the person’s towering figure grows unusually which could even cause death, doctors say. In 2010, Sultan Kosen visited an endocrinologist in Charlottesville to get help for the cure of his abnormal towering figure. Sultan got a written statement from his endocrinologist and neurosurgeon which states, “His skeleton just can’t support him”. It’s a very challenging task to deal with acromegaly circumstances with a height that stands at 8 feet 2.8 inches. And according to doctors the condition of the sultan was very critical because the tumor was spread to the areas of his brain. In April 2010, a neurosurgeon at UVA, Dr. Jason Sheehan, performed a procedure called "Gamma Knife radiosurgery". In this treatment, radiation beams are allowed to focus on the pituitary gland's tumor. Some other medications were also given to him to temporize the hormone production. Later on, from the Kosen’s Turkish doctors it was heard that the production of the excessive hormones got stopped. According to doctors, if this production wasn’t stopped on time it could threaten his life.
